I think it's a combination of the slowly ratcheting tension, the general bastardliness of everyone involved (except the Doctor and Peri, of course) and the surprisingly complex and Gollumesque character of Sharaz Jek that make me love it so much. But I can't expect everyone to like all the same things as me, can I!
