Hmm. that is another very good point about K-9, too. What once divided families has now survived to unite them - I like it!
I can really see your point about his limitations, though. My childhood memories of him seem to consist largely of him hanging around in the TARDIS console room, acting as a sort of centre of operations while the Doctor and co. went off to do all the running around business without him. To me, this seems like his natural habitat - something for the Doctor to come home to, and consult occasionally, rather than a central part of the action.
Similarly, he'd have made a nice contribution to The Sarah Jane Adventures if he'd just stayed in her house all the time, playing the same sort of role that was actually given to Mr. Smith the computer. But if she'd tried taking him with her on her escapades, he might soon have got tiresome. And as for K-9 the series, I think even I might steer clear of that! I've yet to see anything at all which suggests to me that it will be anything other than vapid pop-cartoon kitsch. :-(
