re the mother - I listened to the new book on Mary Shelley this weekend and there was a fascinating section when Mary's stepmother chases after Mary and Percy not so much to 'save' Mary as she has by then spent the night on a boat with Percy and thereby unsaveable but if she could have persuaded Mary to return she would have saved her biological daughters from social taint and so still be able to get them married off. Her plan didn't work ans her eldest killed herself a few years later.
I am very glad I live in an age when I could pick my own husband.
