Mr Prescott issued a statement in which he said: "This is an inaccurate report of a private conversation and it is not my view."

He went on to say: "I don't think the US involvement in the Road Map for the Middle East is crap, I think it's utter shite. And President Bush isn't a cowboy with his Stetson on. Following these comments, Mr Prescott's approval ratings among British voters have sky-rocketed to a record 95%.

President Bush has said he is "...misappointed at Mr Prescott's words. I can too find a Stetson!"
