Geekdom is...

Just realised that my Christmas write-up did not include this classic exchange of dialogue between me and my Dad:

DAD [conversationally, in response to my various Christopher Lee-related presents]: I saw a Christopher Lee film on telly the other day.

ME: *instantly narrows down Christopher Lee's 280 screen credits to those which I know are shown regularly on satellite and cable TV channels*
*further cross-checks this list against my knowledge of films my Dad is likely to watch*
*says* Was it Battle of the V-1?

DAD [moderately, but not excessively surprised]: Yeah, it was actually.

Oh yes, I am that good.

I am impressed!

Andrew's good at things like this with his own dad. The combination of sufficiently-encyclopedic information on a specialist subject, and knowing to what extent that overlaps with known tastes and habits and interests of his dad, means that his dad can ring us when he's in the middle of watching something random on TV and ask a question about as detailed as "who's this guy in this thing?" and Andrew can usually tell him.

Hehe, yeah - I can easily see Andrew doing that.

The annoying thing, of course, is that no-one else in the room at the time realised how incredibly, mind-bogglingly clever my feat of deduction had been - but then of course, that is also what geekdom is, isn't it?

That's also what LJ is for. :) The number of times I've said "I'm surrounded by people who don't appreciate this situation I'm in, so I turn to you, internet!"... :)

:-)

Have you seen him in Taste of Fear aka Scream of Fear? if not, you must do soon. To be fair he's not in it very much but it is one of the best films I've seen in ages.

Yes, I have - a black and white murder mystery featuring a woman in a wheel-chair basically getting gas-lighted, right? Not for at least ten years I think, but I have seen it, and agree that it is good.

Yep - that's the one, really good, really taut thriller.

I doubt you'll be disappointed :-)

Amazing. I'm imagining you using a Terminator-style HUD (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvRb9jZ9wFk).

Hehe - YES! It was exactly like that. :-)
