This is absolutely and entirely the fault of [livejournal.com profile] miss_next. Blame her.

It is also My First Ever Colour Bar. Be gentle with me!

P.S. Any idea who was singing alto on those recordings?

I know - realising I had seven of them was the other thing which prompted me to make the colour bar. There is at least one more in existence, but the scan I have of it is terrible (as in half the picture was missed off the scan), and he is really just a tiny pin-prick in the middle of it anyway.

Am about to round off my pootling by replying to your email, so will answer your other question there.

Professor Alessandro Moreschi was the last castrato (the last singer deliberately castrated to preserve his voice), and the only one of whom we have any half-decent identifiable recordings, made in 1902 and 1904 (when he was already elderly). He sang with the Choir of the Sistine Chapel.

The voice is almost certainly the last of its kind we will ever hear.

Thanks! I'm pretty pleased with it myself, especially given the abysmal quality of some of the original images I was having to work with.

Well, apparently the original one was a plain rainbow (i.e. just blocks of colour, not colourised pictures) that said 'Marriage is Love'. People just ran with the idea from there, I guess.

Wicked icon, BTW!
