I went on a lovely excursion today with [livejournal.com profile] glitzfrau to Hebden Bridge: allegedly, the lesbian hub of Britain.

I'd been there the previous Friday for Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf, but had only got to see it relatively briefly and in partial day-light, so when [livejournal.com profile] glitzfrau expressed a desire for a Sunday excursion, it seemed like a great opportunity to go back for a proper look. It's ever so picturesque, and lovely for wandering around and poking in interesting-looking shops:

The weather, alas, was rather English, which curtailed our photo opportunities, and also put paid to some half-conceived plans to go for a walk along the river. However, so were the people, so that did not stop them doggedly enjoying a World Music festival that was going on in the park, armed with their umbrellas and their cagoules:

In fact, the need to take shelter from regular showers of rain, coupled with the ready availability of charity shops, antique shops and festival stalls, meant that the day ended up developing largely into a very rewarding shopping trip. [livejournal.com profile] glitzfrau got two very pretty tops and some nice bread (which I'm sure she will post about shortly), while I got a nice lilac blouse, a very classic-looking battered denim jacket and the purple flared trousers of my dreams! Seriously, they are the trousers my sixteen-year-old self would have died for - except that back then, they would have fallen off my hips. Now, however, they fit perfectly. Yes, there may be some advantages to growing into a slightly more womanly figure, after all...

Oh, and I got one other thing too. *embarrassed shuffle* A thing I knew about, but had actually consciously planned not to buy, lest it shatter my fannish illusions. As Glitzy will testify, though, it was Not My Fault - it just fell on me in an antiques shop. For £4. So now I have a copy of Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?. Oops!?

Don't we all? *hee* I'm pretty sure they're genuine Seventies originals, actually - and I got them for the princely sum of £3 from a stall at the festival! Win.

Hebden is lovely. I keep meaning to go out there for some of the tree-planting days they have.

Last time I was there, I spied a comely shaven-headed lady in an ankle-length, purple duffel coat, complete with wooden toggle buttons. That one stuck in memory for a variety of reasons ;)

Tree-planting? Bless. That sounds very Hebden.

And it sounds like you would have fared well in our game of lesbian bingo!

I didn't know you didn't have a copy of it already, or I'd have given you the unsigned one of mine! [Obviously, I'm keeping the signed one myself!] It's utterly marvellous, in a bonkers-mad-in-the-nut sort of way. His description of a circle jerk had me in near tears of laughter! :D

Well, thanks for the thought anyway. I'm sure you'll hear what I think of it in these here pages in due course - but I have a bunch of other stuff queuing up to be read first that will have to take priority.

Well, it will be something to look forward to! :)

I've not been to Heben Bridge in ages- the last time was for a Goff picnic which got rained off after half-an-hour and we all ended up in the pub instead.

I seem to recall there being a Chinese takeaway there called "Hu Man" which caused some mirth- I shudder toi think what they put in their Sweet 7 Sour speacial..

Who on Earth is a good read, but our Tom leaves out a couple of things which one would have thought he would have mentioned. I won't say what they are in case it spoils your enjoyment..

Yes, I've already gathered that from reviews. But hey, it's autobiography - every bit as much about putting a carefully-selected version of oneself on public display as blogging... ;-)

Hmm - though your comments about the differences between the textual and audio versions go rather to the root of my reasons for being wary about reading it. Anyway, I'm going to leave doing so for a while, in the hope that I'll have achieved a clearer cognitive separation between him and the Fourth Doctor by the time I get round to it.

You mean there will actually be a separation between him and the doctor? I think to anyone who wasnt brought up on the new series exclusively, he'll always be Dr Who, even to people who didnt like the show.

Why do I have the idea for a survey of people just to see if that point would be valid now...

Ah, we have as yet failed to make it to Ilkley, but it was on the list of excursion possibilities, only just behind Hebden. I shall try and make sure that Glitzy makes it there before she leaves Leeds forever (*wail, gnash, etc.*).
