It was caused by contact with live rails. We get reports on causes of delay to trains, and BADGER ON FIRE was the best I've ever seen. As someone who used to write reports like this, I can tell you that railway employees long for the moment that they can include bizarre things in reports. :)
It was quite exciting. As I passed, the bus-driver was herding all the passengers off the bus and getting them to run away in case it exploded. And there were certainly real, proper flames visible in the engine compartment at the back. Do you actually travel home that way? I'd be curious to know what happened later on.
Yes, it was attracting quite a crowd, I can tell you! Very bad timing, though, just as the rush hour was starting. There was loads of smoke pouring out of it, and a lot of traffic crawling very cautiously by. I've tried looking at local news sites today to find out what happened in the end, but no joy, so I guess it probably went out pretty soon after I passed and was never spectacular enough to attract the attention of news crews.
