Walked into work this morning through snow, both on the ground and falling thickly from the sky. Luckily, I had the good sense to look out of the window before I decided what shoes to wear, so I chose appropriately, and since I only live 10 minutes' walk away from work anyway, it didn't really bother me.

I'm sure it's adversely affecting some people, though, and I feel particularly sorry for those who've now got transport problems to add to exam stress. None of my own students actually have exams today, but it is currently exam season both throughout Queen's and for all those pursuing GCSEs and A-Levels. So sympathies to anyone on my friends list who woke up this morning and thought 'Bugger, that's the last thing I need' rather than 'Ooh! Snow!!'.

I wore cat boots and slid all over the bloody place as well as them letting water in - stupid things! Everyone else seemed capable of walking pretty normally but not me.

At least you tried to be sensible! I saw one woman slipping all over the place in three-inch stiletto heels, and another wearing those awful eighties-style pumps that were trendy in the summer, and having to walk in the middle of the road where there wasn't any snow because of them.

I saw someone in heels who didn't seem to be having any trouble at all, which made me seem even more silly! I didn't actually think about footwear this morning - I just wore the usual - but I could pretend I was being sensible. Truth is I should have remembered these have no grip - I did slip in that hotel in these and get that massive bruise.

I've had to deal with an inordinate amount of student's parents ringing in to say "My son/daughter left the house at stupid o'clock this morning but they're caught in traffic on the (insert name of road very far away) and they won't be able to make their exam before it starts and what do we do and can you do anything to help like make the horrible snow go away?"

Well, maybe not the make the snow go away bit, but the rest is more or less what every call so far this morning has been. But yeah, it can't be nice to have an exam, to have to leave the house at 7am, and to STILL be half an hour late because the traffic is moving at 0.7mph.

Yes, I figured that must be happening. I hope the University will be kind about it, given that there obviously is a problem, and it's affecting loads of people.

Humph. You've got snow. I haven't. Humph.

And I had crawling traffic this morning (two independent accidents on the road I drive to work) without even any nice snowy winter scenery to look at.

Humph.

Ooh, that sucks! Sounds a bit like having a hangover when you know you didn't drink a drop the previous night.

Indeed :)

I don't feel I can grumble too much, though, because however annoying it was to have to sit in a jam, it was a lot worse for the people in the accidents!
