Bound for the Land of the Angles

Just a brief note to the effect that I'm flying to England tomorrow morning to spend the weekend in Birmingham, and will be back in Belfast on Wednesday. I don't expect this to stop me keeping up with LJ, as my parents are fully hooked up to the web.

Several of you I will of course see on Sunday, disrupted travel services permitting. For those who don't know, I shall be exactly half my mother's age that day (9669 days old for me, 19338 for her), so we are having a party to celebrate this event with family and a few friends. Unlike her, I do not propose to spend my 9669th day on this earth giving birth to a bouncing baby girl.

A small thing to be grateful for today: at least commentators on both sides of the Atlantic will be able to agree about how to express the date.

You know, I weighed it pretty carefully myself, especially after all the fuss about poor old verlaine's post. In the end I decided that it was possible to phrase it in a way that would avoid upsets, so I took the plunge. Let's hope I was right!

Well, I liked it. (I liked verlaine's too, though!) And I'm glad he stuck up for himself, pointing out that he wasn't actually saying these people were less important than the New Yorkers that died, nor was there less reason to mourn, nor any other silly thing like that which he was being accused of, and he wasn't going to delete the post. I think that ability to have a sense of humor in the face of tragedy is in fact a really good thing. Death is weird and random and inevitable; I know no better way to deal with it than to laugh about it. I'm glad you saw fit to do the same.
