So Gordon Brown is concerned that the union between England and Scotland is under threat.

What do you think?

I've got no idea what useful purpose it would serve to be an independent sovereign nation as small as *any* subpart of the UK...

Me neither. I'm also, as a general principle, more interested in seeing nations establishing formal modes of cooperation than undoing them. But I'm interested to hear what others think.

Well, there are plenty of other small sovereign nations out there who do fine.

I'm also more interested in seeing nations cooperate, and I'd expect Scotland to cooperate in Europe far more readily than Britain does, which is one reason I vaguely support independence. And Scotland would cooperate with people other than America, which would be nice :)

But as I said on someone else's journal the other day, the main reason I'll vote for independence in a referendum just now is because it seems the only way of not having London's nuclear weapons on my doorstep for the next 100 years.

Hee, yeah - that's a pretty good reason. But it does leave those people in England who'd rather not have the weapons renewed, or cooperate with America so much, up the swanee! From our point of view, it would be better to keep hold of as many people as possible who feel the same way, in Scotland or wherever, to try to make sure the perspective carries some weight.

Yeah, true. I can't even imagine how much weight it would need to make NuLab actually paid any attention to people, though... There were a bunch of Scottish, Welsh and European politicians arrested at a Faslane demo the other week, and as far as I know it didn't even hit the national press.
