I am disappointed.

See, now that I live in my own house instead of a flat for the first time ever on Halloween, and in a reasonably family-ish neighbourhood, too, I figured I might get kids round trick-or-treating. So I was ready! I had a huge bowl full of yummy treats. And I made sure I left the porch light on, and all. But no children came. :-(

I wanted to ward off evil spirits with propitiatory offerings, dammit!

I guess now I will just have to eat all those sweets myself...

Are you still up for coming on Sat? Do say yes! And bring your sweets!

Oh dear - I fear I can't say yes, as I have been having a pretty crummy week this week in terms of getting work done, and I'm now teetering dangerously on the edge of a crisis if I don't pull my finger out pronto. :-( I have a paper to deliver next Friday which I haven't started on, and I also still haven't done the revisions to a book chapter I wrote in September which I was supposed to have finished by now so I'd be clear to start on the paper. So there is woe.

I have however, emailed my Study Abroad students in Italy to see when they'll be free to receive a pastoral visit, and the 8th December and following is looking good. Verona is near both Venice and Milan, both of which I'm keen to visit! I will email you when I've had a chance to devote a bit more thought to the fine details - but are you still interested on principle?

Definitely interested in Italy. Sorry you won't be able to make it this weekend, but hope you get lots of work done instead.

X

Bah, same here - and I put out a jack-o-lantern too. Must remember to go and blow it out before I go to bed.

Oh well, mini Crunchies ahoy for the workmates tomorrow...

I didn't have a jack-o-lantern myself, so perhaps could have tried harder. But it sounds like even having one isn't always enough, then!

Come to the States. I'm getting up every five minutes to answer the door! And my talking pirate skeleton doorhanger is going down a storm...

Granted, I'm giving them all bat-shaped pretzels instead of sweets. I've seen how much sugar kids get at Hallowe'en here, and I refuse to assist in such wanton tooth decay!

Aw, you are very responsible!

(And to think American sit-coms like to joke about how all British people have bad teeth!)

Last year I bought loads of sweets to give out (since most Hallowe'ens prior I was either in Whitby or had only just come back from Whitby and was unprepared) and I waited by my door.

At about 6.30 some small children knocked on my door in their Hallowe'en costumes (accompanied by an adult) and they all got a handful of sweets.

I sat back down wating for the next knock on the door but there was nothing for aaages.

It got to the stage when I thought it would be too late to be out trick or treating when at just after 8.30 another group of children turned up (again with an adult). I decided that they would likely be the last of the evening so they all got bumper handouts just to get rid of all the chocs! One even came back a few minutes later but he was very polite (if not a bit cheeky) so he got some more. Once his friends found out, they all came back.

So, in the end I got rid of most of the sweets and helped fuel the obesiry epidemic in children just a little bit. :)

If any kids had come round to my house last night, they would seriously have hit the jackpot! I don't know what the hell I am going to do with a massive bowl full of lollipops now.

Oh, that is sad! We had rakes and rakes of cheeky kids in costumes over their shalwar kameezes and hijabs. Very very cute, but slightly ungrateful!

Curses.

If I'd known that there were lots of free sweets going, I'd have been stood outside your house all night with a sheet over my head and going "wooooh".

Until the Police arrived, that is.

Ta.

I purchased it at Whitby from the same place that did my Daz Towers plaque a few years back. It'll be put up by the basement door when I get round to it.

having just got my own house too, I too prepared with sweets,

my only group of trick or treat'ers were about 16 and had the worst costumes in the world..

mind you i didn't get home from work til after 7.30 so that probably didn't help.

Oh, I'm glad to hear yours has all gone through now - I remember when we were both going through the whole mortgage process at the same time!

Yeah, I didn't get home until a little after 6 myself, so may have missed some early callers.

Hmmm. Swings and roundabouts you know - I spent £10 on sweets, welcomed 6 groups of trick or treaters AND still got eggs thrown at my house - a little unfair, I thought :(

Oh no! How horrid! Mind you, I do remember doing that sort of stuff when I was a kid myself. I went round with a bunch of local children when we were on holiday once at Halloween (I suppose for half-term?), and we'd get given treats, but then say "Can we do a trick as well?" I think we liked that bit better than the treats!

Did Holly join in and dress as a little pumpkin?

Aw, that sounds most cute!

As for the lj links, it's all pointy brackets round here, not square. What you need is <lj user=strangesam>

I hope there will be pictures of your costume. :-)

Ah ta muchly! I should have remembered, I did read how to link users once, doh!

The costume shall appear (prob. on facebook) after the event. Having been off work I've had a lot of time to put it together, and I'm quite proud of myself, actually doing sewing and all :)
